Wandering around the shopping streets can be fun, if you enjoy the hassle. Virtually every shopkeeper will invite you into his store to drink tea, Coke, Sprite or Fanta with him, while he tells you that his souvenirs are cheaper and better than the competition! What I really like about these little shops is the trust shown - even in jewellery shops where they may be several thousand pounds worth of gold and silver on show, the manager will often leave the shop to get tea or some other drink. I can't imagine that happening in the West!

This particular shop had some of the best carved souvenirs that I'd seen. It is in one of the bigger market areas, and can be highly recommended. OK - it's blatant advertising, but like many small businesses, it could do with the trade!

As well as shops, as you wander around Luxor, there are street stalls selling all manner of things. This pottery stall sells everyday pottery for local people.

A fruit shop in one of the back streets, away from the main tourist area.
A spice shop in the 'real' Luxor.
A butcher's shop - not what the Western world would call the most hygienic, but, in some respects it is. The meat hanging outside is freshly killed, and will usually be sold within hours.

And finally, as a good argument against globalisation is this well known place!

Fast food takes on a whole new meaning when it is delivered to your table by a waiter or waitress in five minutes. But the local teenagers like it.
